Celebrating a 60th birthday anniversary in KL!

Ah, another photo-opportunity will arise, when my family and I go back to Subang Jaya to celebrate the 60th anniversary of my brother-in-law. Indeed, we have come a long way from the 50s; where we were born just after the Second World War. My mother and my mother-in-law tell me about the hardship, the atrocities, the fear and the hunger in the 40s. The baby boomers of the 50s are indeed a very lucky generation, despite the lack of many modern amenities.

Despite all that, we survive and thrive and arrive into the 21st century. It is an achievement for many of us, to have live and bring up the next generation. Celebrating this achievement is both meaningful and sending a message that we will continue this great journey of life.

How can I use the camera to capture this celebration? His kids have decided to hold a big dinner and ensure he has the fish which he likes on the plate. There will be a table for fourteen members and hence will be tight in space.

This environment will call for my UWA (Ultra Wide Angle) lens, the Sigma 10-20mm and I need to test that my new Pentax 540AF flash will work well with the UWA. It may still be alright to take a picture of the "fish" when it is served with a 20mm focal length. I can also try the flash in a wireless manner depending on the setting. I will see if I can get some orange gel to simulate the color rendition of the light.

If there is a family photograph, I need to ensure that there will be no light reflection from glass at the back. This is a common mistake, which happens all the time. I will bring the tripod, though I am not sure if I have enough space to set it up without the danger of it being tripped by waiters or waitresses. I don't want a very expensive gear to land up on the dirt!

I am set to bring minimum amount of gear back for this short trip. I look forward to celebrate this event with the family.

Samsung Omnia i900 - ActiveSync and Productivity

Upgraded the firmware as I noted that the camera is taking very bad pictures. The auto mode on white balance does not produce the color tones. In fact, as I stated in my feedback to Samsung; that the pictures produced such whitish colors as if the people are 'dead'! This is unfortunate, as the output is worst than my previous Nokia N73. After the firmware changed (PHONE/PDA: i900DXHJ1/DZHJ1), the pictures from the camera is a lot closer to the original color tones. This is the good news. The bad news is obviously that I have to reinstall all the files and external programs. The ActiveSync initially would not work, and I went to Samsung at Vivocity (Singapore) to talk to the folks there. Finally got it working again, where I can synchronize with my Outlook, where all the phone database is. I cannot sync with the server, as the corporate server is highly secured. The synchronization of the phone and Outlook (my work "portal") is the key to ensuring I have the critical d...

Is Gen Y in trouble?

Gen Y are people born somewhere in the mid 70s, and should be around thirtyish by now. Most of them in the developed countries are used to the good life style. Is this generation in trouble? Here's an article from Business Week. Think about our kids, who are part of this Gen Y. http://www.businessweek.com/investor/content/jul2010/pi20100715_116291.htm The Straits Times in Singapore carried a couple of articles as well on Gen Y. They are more attuned to pop, iPhone, gaming, luxury goods, pub, wine which the baby boomers avoid to plan for the future. What will the future hold for them and for us? Do we have to support the Gen Y as well from our retirement fund?
